Growing Nigeria’s Shea Sector for Global Markets

September 6, 2024

Nigeria, located in the ‘shea belt’ south of the Sahara, holds the majority of the world’s shea trees. With increasing global demand for shea-based food and cosmetic products, Nigeria’s shea sector is well-positioned for growth.

In 2021, CBI launched the Shea Nigeria Project to support Nigerian SMEs and cooperatives in expanding their presence in the EU and regional markets. This project focuses on sustainable, fairly sourced shea from women producers, with goals to increase high-value production, create decent work opportunities for women, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Nigerian shea industry.

The project helps Nigerian shea companies become competitive in international markets and improves the income and working conditions of women producers through health, safety, and sustainability initiatives.
